Although it may sound blasphemous for a lot of enthusiasts, different type of whiskies can be enjoyed in a lot of cocktails during these hot, summer days. We tried to gather a list of some well-known and some not-so-known Whisky cocktails which you may mix with your favorite  ‘liquid gold’.

PENICILLIN

Penicilin is the rebirth of whiskey sour with a peaty and smoky twist. It has spread from a bar in Manhattan`s Lower East side and offers tangy, sweet and smoky flavors all at once. A must for any peated whisky enthusiast.

Penicilin Recipe

  • 1 ½ ounce Whisky of your Choice (Unpeated)
  • ¼ ounce Islay Whisky of your choice (As peated as you wish. Laphroaig is the traditional choice)
  • ¾ ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/8 ounce Honey or Sugar Syrup
  • 1/8 ounce Sweetened Ginger Juice

Pour all the ingredients into a tumbler glass. Top it with ice and garnish it with candied ginger.

Peniclin Body

THE SUBURBAN

The Suburban dates from the late 19th century. According to the Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book, it was one of the drinks invented there to celebrate “the triumphs of James R. Keene and his friends and other famous stable owners on nearby courses.”

The Suburban Recipe

  • 1 ½ ounce Rye Whisky
  • ½ ounce Dark Rum
  • ½ ounce Port
  • 1 dash Orange bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Stir well with cracked ice, then strain into chilled cocktail glass.

THE SAZERAC

The Sazerac is the official cocktail of New Orleans. It is named for the Sazerac de Forge et Fils brand of Cognac brandy that served as its original main ingredient. Although its main ingredient is cognac, rye and bourbon whisky are traditionally substituted.

The Sazerac Recipe

  • 1 ½ ounce Cognac, Rye or Bourbon
  • ½ ounce Absinthe
  • One sugar cube
  • 2 dashes Peychaud Bitters

Rinse the tumbler glass with absinth and crushed ice. Stir the remaining ingredients over ice. Strain the excess absinth from glass and strain the drink in to the glass. Garnish it with lemon peel.

Sazerac Body

MINT JULEP

Mint Julep has been the traditional drink of the world famous Kentucky Derby event for nearly a century. Each year, more than 100.000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day race weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack.

Mint Julep Recipe

  • ½ ounce Sugar Syrup or Brown Sugar
  • ½ ounce Water
  • Springs of Fresh Mint
  • Crushed Ice
  • 2 ½ ounce Whisky of your choice (Straight Bourbon is the traditional choice)

Fill your cup with crushed ice. Add one tablespoon of sugar syrup, couple leaves of fresh mint, Whisky and stir. Garnish it with fresh mint.

REMEMBER THE MAINE

Remember the Maine is a classic cocktail courtesy of Charles H. Baker’s fine book, The Gentleman’s Companion. It draws its name from the ill-fated USS Maine and the pre Spanish-American War rallying cry, “Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!”

Remember The Maine Recipe

  • 1 ½ ounce Rye Whisky
  • ¾ ounce Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 bar spoons Cherry Heering
  • ½ bar spoon Absinthe

Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into chilled coupe.

BLOOD AND SAND

Blood and Sand is one of the few classic mixed drinks that includes Scotch. It was named for Rudolph Valentino‘s 1922 bullfighter movie Blood and Sand. The recipe is first known to have appeared in the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book.

Blood and Sand Recipe

  • ¾ ounce Scotch of your choice
  • ¾ ounce Blood Orange Juice
  • ¾ ounce Sweet Vermouth
  • ¾ ounce Cherry Heering

Pour all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into Cocktail glass. Flame orange zest over the top of the glass.

THE IRISH REDHEAD

One of the easiest cocktails that you can do with only 2 or 3 ingredients. You can never go wrong with an Irish Redhead.

The Irish Redhead Recipe

  • 1 ½ ounce Irish Whisky
  • ¾ ounce Grenadine
  • 6 ounce Sprite

Stir all ingredients together in a Collins glass filled with ice cubes and serve. You can replace Sprite and Grenadine with an energy drink of your choice.

HOT BLOODED

Even in summer if you like to add more spice into your day or night, Hot Blooded is the cocktail of choice for you. IMPORTANT NOTE: Use gloves. There is some serious Jalapeno handling in this recipe.

Hot Blooded Recipe

  • 1 ½ ounce Whisky
  • 2 ounce Blood Orange Juice
  • ½ tablespoon Agave
  • ¼ chopped, stem removed Jalapeno

Add everything other than Jalapeno into a cocktail shaker and stir. Add the jalapenos, shake three times and immediately pour through a strainer into highball glass filled with ice. Strain out any remaining jalapenos.

Hot Blooded Body

REVOLVER

Arm yourself with this bourbon and coffee liqueur cocktail. Introduced by San Francisco bartender Jon Santer in the early 2000s, the Revolver is locked and loaded with the spicy bite of rye-heavy Bulleit Bourbon and a slug of coffee liqueur.

The Revolver Recipe

  • 2 ounce Bourbon (Bulleit Bourbon is the traditional choice here)
  • ¼ ounce Coffee Liqueur
  • 2 dashes Orange Bitters

Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir until well chilled and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a wide strip of orange peel.

Revolver Body

SUFFERING BASTARD

The drink’s origins can be traced to the Long Bar at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo. It was created as a remedy for hangovers by the Shepheard’s bar steward, Joe Scialon, in the late 1940s

Suffering Bastard Recipe

  • 1 ounce Bourbon
  • 1 ounce Gin
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 4 ounces’ Sprite

Pour all the ingredients into an ice filled tumbler and top it with Sprite. Garnish with a spring of mint or orange slice.
