GlenDronach 21 Year Old is the oldest core range expression coming from the Highland distillery. Originally founded in 1826, GlenDronach is one of the first distilleries in Highland legally ‘licenced’ to produce whisky after the ‘Excise Act’ of 1823. The distillery is currently owned by Brown-Forman Corporation.

GlenDronach likes to name its core range editions and this one is no exception. GlenDronach 21 Year Old has been named as ‘Parliament’ after the colony, or ‘parliament’, of rooks that have been nesting in the trees that overlook the distillery for almost 200 years. Other bottles in this range are, ‘The Hielan’ – 8-Year-Old, ‘The Original’ – 12 Year Old, discontinued ‘The Revival’ – 15-Year-Old and ‘Allardice’ – 18-Year-Old.

‘Parliament’ is the result of mixing PX (Pedro Ximenez) and Oloroso Sherry Cask matured spirits. No detailed information is available regarding the ratios of these casks but based on whisky being more ‘sweet’ than ‘fruity’ we can safely assume that PX casks were more dominant in the aging process.

GlenDronach 21 Year Old comes bottled at 48% ABV. It is non-chilled filtered and does not contain any artificial coloring additives. It is available on The Whisky Exchange website with a price tag of £115.

GlenDronach 21 Year Old ‘Parliament’ Whisky Tasting Notes

Color: Burnt cinnamon with dark golden highlights…

Nose: Strong fruit aromas with fresh oak… Fruity notes of dark berries, plums and sultanas… almost on a ‘rum’ like level… All these fruits balanced with ‘oak’ dominant old wood… faint furniture polish and leather-like aromas found in an old library… a touch of earthy/musky notes along with black pepper and clovers… bitter aromas of dark chocolate and ground coffee… Sulphur on the background…

Palate: Full bodied, warm and creamy texture… sweet warm fruit compote… cherries, raisins and berries topped with vanilla and rum syrup… this sweetness enhanced with chocolate… walnuts and almond add to the overall complexity… ginger, nutmeg and maybe a bit of anise… wood flavors are almost overwhelmed by the fruits but the dryness and some mellow bitterness is there…

Finish: Long finish… coconut and chocolate aftertaste…

I am a big fan of ‘Sherry’ touched whiskies and naturally, GlenDronach is one of my favorite distilleries and this expression is a masterpiece in showing the best features of their spirits. Whisky with the intense but smooth flavor profile. Another point I like about GlenDronach is, that their pricing scheme is more ‘down to earth’ than some of their competitors.

With all these in mind, GlenDronach 21 Year Old is a great whisky and a true ‘Sherry Bomb’. Get yourself a bottle and enjoy it with your loved ones… Fantastic…

Enjoy…
