Initially released for Christmas and New Year back in 2015, GlenDronach Madeira Wood Finish 19 Year Old offers a ‘dram bursting with ripe summer fruits and warm spices’.This expression is crafted using whiskies from casks that were distilled before the distillery was mothballed in 1996.

The maturation story of GlenDronach Madeira Wood Finish 19 Year Old begins in European oak casks and finishes in a small batch of Madeira hogsheads before bottling.

Madeira is a fortified wine available in a range of dry to sweet styles. It gets its name from the island of Madeira, a small, beautiful rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The unique taste of the wine comes from repeatedly heating the wine.

GlenDronach Madeira Wood Finish 19 Year Old is non-chill filtered and comes at 46% ABV. A total of 3.111 bottles were released from this lovely expression

GlenDronach Madeira Wood Finish 19 Year Old Whisky Tasting Notes

Color: Warm gold. (Natural Color)

Nose: Sweet fruit aromas and a subtle flowery perfume. Crisp, fresh green apple and pear peels drizzled with a honey and lemon mix. A healthy amount of spices in the form of ginger, cinnamon, and some pepper puts the warming touch. Some oaky dryness and tartness at the background.

Palate: Starts warm with a spicy kick of cinnamon and ginger. Shortly after, the sweeter notes of apples, pears, and peach begin to appear and balance things out. Some brown sugar and toasted hazelnuts. A touch of lemon and orange all around.

Finish: Medium finish with spices and sharp acidity of green apples.

Madeira finishing has always been a favourite of mine when it comes to whisky finishing. It has a sweet character but it also works well with other notes. GlenDronach Madeira Wood Finish 19 Year Old may not be your typical ‘Sherrybomb’ GlenDroanch but it still is a great expression if you like the sweeter side of Scotch. Unfortunately, finding a bottle can be a challenge.
