Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 1 is the first edition, released back in 2012 by the distillery. This NAS (Non Age Statement) expression replaced the old 10 Year Old edition.

Based on the information provided by the company, Glengoyne’s stills are Scotland’s slowest, providing a gentle journey for the spirit developing the distillery’s unique flavor profile. In addition to this, Glengoyne dry their barley by air without using any peat. This unlocks the subtle, complex flavors of slow distillation and exquisite wood.

The casks used are from Spanish oaks which are filled with Oloroso sherry before being shipped to the distillery. The process may take up to 6 years. The unique characteristic is made by blending first-fill sherry-matured whisky with refill-matured malt.

Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 1 is available at 58.7% ABV. It has natural color and comes Un-ChilledFiltered. Currently they are at Batch 4 so getting yourself Batch 1 may be tricky as it is discontinued. At the time of this post Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 4 was available at Whisky Exchange with a price tag of £49.15

Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 1 Whisky Tasting Notes

Color: Rich Amber with bronze highlights…

Nose: Complex and strong… fruity sweetness with a healthy does of spices… Sherry notes are very dominant, red berries, sultanas, prunes and dates form the main aroma… spices balance the fruits very well… Cinnamon, peppers and nutmeg… acidity in the form of lemon zest with a hint of chocolate at the background…

Palate: Rich and dry… Very aggressive start with a strong spice presence… Cinnamon and black pepper… Dark fruits of sherry casks rush into the taste buds… Bitter chocolate is very well felt in the mouth… burnt coffee grounds show up later in the game…

Finish: Rich, satisfying and a loooong finish… Tons of sherry fruits remain lingering over your tongue… Bit of burnt wood and toffee like left overs stay a bit longer…

This is a great ‘Sherry Bomb’ from Glengoyne… Very Rich and Complex whisky but not overwhelmingly sweet… Burnt wood and zesty touches provide a great balance… Absolutely a great dram especially if you are a fan of Cask Strength Sherry Bombs… I put this up top, along with the other heavy hitters, Glenfarclas 105 and Aberlour A’bunadh…

Enjoy…
