One of the most exciting sides of being a Whisky Blogger is hunting down samples for some of the rare expressions. Today I will be writing about one of these which took me months to get my hands on – Paul John Oloroso Cask from John Distilleries of India.

There are two main reasons making this a ‘Very Limited’ whisky. First; this is a single cask expression and only 252 bottles were available worldwide. Second; this is a great expression so whoever had the chance to get one, does not like to part from it that easily. After months of searching, networking, asking friends, bribing and even begging at some point, I managed to find a sample via a friend of mine who had a friend that knew someone… So here we are tasting this ‘fantastic’ dram.

Paul John Oloroso is a 7 year old single cask expression. – Please do keep in mind that, thanks to the tropical climate of Goa, India, the maturation periods and shares of the angels are way different than those in Scotland -. The distilled spirit spent the first 3 years of its maturation in Ex-Bourbon American Oak barrels – John Distilleries use Ex Buffalo Trace and Jim Beam casks -. Afterwards it was transferred into Oloroso Sherry Casks for an additional 4 years before being bottled.

Paul John Oloroso comes with 57.4 ABV. It comes without chill filtration and does not contain any artificial coloring. I am sorry to say this but getting a bottle other than auction sites seems to be impossible at this moment.

Paul John Oloroso Whisky Tasting Notes

Color: Rich amber color, almost like steeped tea…

Nose: Elegant and sophisticated with a tropical touch… Fresh fruits along with vanilla and nuts… Sherry influence brought by raisins, red-berries along with orange peel and dried mango… maybe a bit of pineapple… strong vanilla aromas and wood spices bring out the bourbon side of the expression… feint notes of caramel and dark chocolate…

Palate: Full bodied and oily texture in the mouth. Very well balanced sweetness and spices… It opens up with spice explosion… like ginger and a little bit of white pepper…The spiciness quickly balanced with the sweet fruit flavors thanks to the sherry cask… brown sugar sprinkled raspberries, raisin and sultanas… Malty and nutty wood notes… almonds covered with caramel and vanilla syrup…

Finish: Pretty long finish… Similar to the palate, starts with a spicy after taste quickly being replaced with fruity sweetness… in the last part sweetness take a more malty form like fresh honey… Tasty and tempting fro another sip…

This is great whisky especially if you are a ‘Sherry Bomb’ fan. It does offer some intense but well balanced flavor characteristics. Although it does have more ABV than your everyday dram, it is an easy to drink dram even without adding water. Only down side of it as I mentioned before, is that getting a bottle is next to impossible. So I hope PAul John keeps on releasing more of this great spirit…

Enjoy…
