Earlier this year, Springbank Distillery announced the long awaited Springbank 16 Year Old Local Barley. This was the first new ‘Local Barley’ expression release since 2001.
Original Springbank Local Barley editions were famous in mid 1990’s to early 2000’s for their extraordinary quality back. These expressions were made using local barley sourced from nearby farms around the distiller’s location in Campbeltown. Some of these old expressions, matured more than 30 years, were highly praised by the Whisky authorities and became ‘bottles of desire’ for the enthusiasts all around the world.
Springbank 16 Year Old Local Barley is an expression distilled in September of 1999 and matured for 16 years in 80% Ex Bourbon and 20% European Oak Sherry casks. The type of barley used for this edition is ‘Prisma Barley’ sourced from the Low Machrimore Farm located in the south of the Kintyre peninsula.
Springbank uses traditional floor malting methods for all of its expressions and this edition was no exception. All other stages of whisky making, kilning, milling, and mashing, were also made on the premises, making this a real ‘Local’ Campbeltown product.
According to the information provided by the company, this is the first in a series of five expressions to be released over five years.
Springbank 16 Year Old Local Barley is limited to 9000 bottles worldwide. It comes bottled at 54.3% ABV. As usual for Springbank, it is non-chilled filtered and does not include any coloring additives. It is available from Whisky Exchange for around £80.
Springbank 16 Year Old Local Barley Whisky Tastin Notes
Color: Medium Gold,
Nose: Malty but with a sweet touch. Engine Oil and ash like notes, some light peat at the background… Honey and vanilla with a touch of citrus… Some fruity aromas like compote lingering very lightly all around…
Palate: Offers more fruity flavors than the nose… Thick and warm compote with sweet appricot, honeyed pears and lots of vanilla… Some acidic flavors in the form of grapefruit… half hidden peat and industrial polish like flavors rounding things up a bit… Very complex and well developed
Finish: Long finish… Sweet fruits flavors, apples and honeyed pears, balanced with damp, almost mossy like, earthy notes… Smoke and peat presence is stronger…
Springbank 16 Year Old Local Barley is a fantastic dram. On one hand It has the spirit of its older brothers, on the other it offers some popular notes and flavors creating a great satisfying and high quality whisky.
I included this expression in my ‘Top 3 Sing Malts of 2016’ list and strongly recommend it to all whisky fans. Unfortunately, thanks to its limited nature and extreme popularity, getting a bottle has become almost impossible. Unless you are willing to spend much more than its regular price in auction sites.
