Earlier this year Teeling Distillery released the first bottle of a new series created to honor the glorious days of Liberties area of Dublin City where the original Teeling Distillery was located. Teeling Brabazon Bottling No 1 is a limited edition expression ‘capturing the full impact and flavor crafted through fortified wine cask maturation’.

During the creation of this edition, Teeling wanted to create a full, true sherry experience that no other Irish Whiskey can provide so they focused on flavor rather than age. The backbone of the expression is 2008, 2007 and 2005 Sherry butts. Along with different age spirits, a combination of PX (Pedro Ximenez) and Oloroso casks were used to create the unique flavor profile. The recipe for this edition is as follows;

  • 30% of 2008 whiskey fully matured in ex-sherry butts
  • 30% of 2007 whiskey fully matured in ex-sherry butts
  • 30% of 2005 whiskey fully matured in ex-sherry butts
  • 5% of 2002 whiskey finished in PX / Oloroso barrels
  • 5% of 2001 whiskey fully matured in sherry hogsheads

Regarding this new expression, Jack Teeling, Managing Director of Teeling Whiskey, commented;

“Our new Irish Single Malt brings together two famous Dublin family names – the Teelings and the Brabazons. By making reference to the historical Brabazon name, we are telling the story of why our family first came to the Liberties area of Dublin. But more importantly we are telling the story of why we are here now. Our aim with the whiskey was to create a full bodied tasting experience for people who enjoy the added complexity and taste sherry casks impart, and at the same time continuing our goal to expand the spectrum of flavors available from premium Irish whiskeys.”

Teeling Brabazon Bottling No 1 comes bottled at 49.5% ABV and with no chill filtration allowing for all the natural flavors of this whiskey to be retained. This edition is limited to 12,500 bottles and is presented in a new premium distinctive embossed and debossed Teeling whiskey bottle, rounding off a truly unique Irish whiskey to savor. It is available on The Whisky Exchange Website with a price tag of around £70.Teeling Brabazon Bottling No 1

Teeling Brabazon Bottling No 1 Whiskey Tasting Notes

Color: Pale gold… almost like olive oil…

Nose: Less sherry touch than expected… Fruity sweetness is there in the forms of dried red fruits like raisins, plums, and bits of apricots… what balances this sweetness is the strong oak influence bringing the nutty and spicy aromas into the play… roasted hazelnuts and walnuts along with some clover… some dark chocolate and toffee in the background…

Palate: Fresh fruits… apples, pears and apricots like a warm compote drizzled with caramel syrup… topped with torched brown sugar… roasted nuts and almond create a nutty character… some soaked/damp oak feel… spices and bitter notes come out at the end…

Finish: Medium to a long finish… Sweet flavors disappearing fast leaving behind the dry oak and some spicy notes…

This expression was a bit a surprise for me. After reading about it I was expecting more of a ‘Sherry Bomb’ type of whisky – keeping in mind 90% of the spirit was matured exclusively in Ex-Sherry butts – but it turned out to be a well-balanced result. The reason behind is the type of oak used for the casks – the general consensus is Europen Oak. Still, this is an easy to drink and tasty Irish whiskey and I highly recommend it.

The second bottle in the series is almost here. Rumor is it will focus on Port Casks. Watch our website for more information soon…
