This was one of the most awaited releases of the year and it is finally here. Yamazaki 18 Mizunara Cask is officially released by the Japanese whisky giant Suntory. The distillery believes this expression brings the essence of the noble Mizunara into a peerless liquid – tantalizingly spicy, redolent of incense and uniquely Japanese.

According to the information provided by the distillery;  In his pursuit of true “Mizunara-ness,” Suntory’s fourth Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo tasted a few hundred Mizunara whiskies and made selections with varying ages, from 18 years old and beyond. A very small portion exceed even 50 years of maturation, which give this limited edition an incomparable depth and a flavor that lingers long after the liquid has passed the lips.He wanted this uniquely Japanese whisky to be dramatic and unforgettable:

“I wanted to reveal the whisky’s soul that is the Art of Mizunara—a heightened sense and awakened palate engaged through aromas and flavors never known before. Encountering it should be a moment of epiphany.”

Yamazaki 18 Mizunara Cask 2017 Edition is limited to 5.000 bottles. It comes with 48% ABV and a suggested retail price of US$1,000. The bottle label is 100% handcrafted mulberry Echizen paper produced via a slow process of drying on wood boards (a traditional Japanese method). The wood box that encloses the bottle is made of cask material used in the aging of Suntory whisky.

Yamazaki 18 Mizunara Cask Whisky Tasting Notes

Color: Maple syrup with golden highlights…

Nose: Well balanced nose… Strong vanilla presence along with sweet, creamy cedarwood aromas… resin pouring from freshly cut pine branches… additional fruity sweetness from coconut and raisins… All these masterfully balanced with rich spices… black peppers, cinnamon and oriental spices… darker aromas like chocolate covered coffee beans increase the complexity…

Palate: Rich, full-bodied… Starts with zesty and sweet flavors… tropical fruits; coconuts, sultanas and a little bit of tangerine… spices start to come out halfway through… Cinnamon, aniseed and some black pepper keep things popping over the tongue… Lemon and pine flavors add a refreshing touch… dark chocolate and a little bit of fresh tobacco leave in the background…

Finish: Medium to long… Sweetness disappearing fast… leaving behind an oak like dryness, almost nutty and spicy aftertaste…

The ‘oriental’ touch of the Mizunara makes this a true Japanese whisky. Mizunara oak adds new aromas and flavors to the whisky which creates a unique drinking experience for the enthusiasts. I would recommend to everyone but unfortunately only 5.000 bottles and an RRP of US$ 1000 will make this expression unreachable to many… Still, if you ever get the chance to try it or looking for a special dram for ‘that’ special moment, consider it seriouslly. You wouldn’t be making a mistake…

Have Fun…
