Yoichi is one of the two single malt distilleries owned by the Japanese whisky giant Nikka. Currently Yoichi Single Malt NAS is the only expression available from the distillery. This smoky whisky with a maritime character is a blend of single malts from different years and consequently does not carry an age statement.

Yoichi, originally founded under the name Hokkaido, was the first distillery built by the legendary Masataka Taketsuru back in 1934. After departing from Shinjiro Torii, Taketsuru setup his first distillery in the fishing village of Yoichi located in the northern island of Hokkaido. Taketsuru wanted to make oily and smoky whisky similar to those produced in the coastal parts of Scotland. Thanks to the location and climate similarities to Scotland, Yoichi seemed to be the perfect location for this task.

Yoichi single malt has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during the aging process.

Unfortunately due to the ever increasing demand for the Japanese Whisky, Nikka had to take some drastic action in all of its distilleries to avoid running out of stock and face closure. Back in 2015, they have discontinued all of their core range, which included 10, 12, 15 and 20 year old Yoichi expressions, and started offering just one NAS expression from the distillery.

Yoichi Single Malt Nas Whisky comes with a 45% ABV and available from Whisky Exchange for £68Yoichi Single Malt

Nikka Yoichi Single Malt NAS Whisky Tasting Notes

Color: Light Golden

Nose: Opens up with fresh fruits, apples, oranges a bit of lemon… Light smoke and peat notes comes out surrounded with fresh mint and salty aromas… Little bit of spices in the background…

Palate: Peat is more distinctive in the mouth… Fruity flavors, apples, oranges and melon balancing the light spices… very light caramelized toffee and chocolate poping out…

Finish: Medium silky finish… Fruity flavors leaving behind mint, eucalyptus like freshness…

Yoichi Single Malt NAS Whisky is a good example of well-balanced whisky, Although it does carry a lot of flavor profiles, none of these establish its dominance over the others…  It is not robust and complex as the older expressions of Yoichi but still a good dram especially for this price range… I highly recommend it…
