It looks like BenRiach distillery will be releasing a 21 Year Old Peated expression soon. First information about this new edition, named ‘BenRiach – Rarus’ can be found from the label application on TTB.
TTB Public Registry has been a good source of information regarding the upcoming new spirits. It should also not be forgotten that there are always possibilities the whisky or any other spirit, even with label approval, may not make it to the market for any reason. Until we receive an official statement from the distillery itself, everything we discuss here should be treated as buzz…
The spirits that form the hearth of BenRiach Rarus come from four different cask maturation; Ex-Bourbon, Virgin Oak, Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. The alcohol content will be at 46% ABV.
Based on the information provided on the back label;
“Back in the 1970s, BenRiach made the bold move of distilling a portion of its whisky using peated malted barley, making a return to the original Speyside character and flavour of malts made during the nineteenth century.
BenRiach Rarus has been matured for at least twenty one years in four different types of cask: Bourbon Barrels, Virgin Oak casks, Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
Whsiky from these four woods is than expertly blended together by our Whisky Maker to create a rare, Speyside spirit that captures multi-faceted notes of caramelized pear and tropical fruits, balanced with toasted oak spice,, all engulfed by a honeyed peat smoke.”
